Classification and introduction of common UPS batteries

2020-10-18

There are three kinds of UPS batteries commonly used in UPS power supply applications, including open liquid lead-acid battery, maintenance-free battery and nickel-chromium battery, which affect the battery life. Different kinds of UPS batteries also have their own advantages and disadvantages. At present, the batteries supplied by UPS power supply manufacturers are generally maintenance-free batteries. The following are the features of the three types of batteries to avoid maintenance:

1. Open liquid lead acid battery

According to the structure of the battery can be divided into 8-10 years, 15-20 years of life. As the acid electrolysis of the battery will produce corrosive gases, such batteries must be installed in a room ventilated and away from sophisticated electronic equipment, and the battery room should be covered with anti-corrosion tiles.

Due to evaporation, it is necessary to regularly measure the specific gravity of open batteries and add acid and water. The battery can withstand high temperature and pressure and deep discharge. The battery room should be non-smoking and open battery rack.

The battery cannot be transported after charging, so it must be installed on site and the initial charging usually takes 55-90 hours. The normal voltage per section is 2V, and the initial charging voltage is 2.6-2.7V.

2. Nickel-chromium battery

Unlike lead-acid batteries, these produce hydrogen and oxygen when electrolyzed without producing corrosive gases and can be installed next to electronic equipment. And water consumption is very small, generally do not need maintenance. The normal life span is 20-25 years. Far more expensive than the aforementioned batteries. The initial installation costs about three times as much as a lead-acid battery. The high ambient temperature will not affect the battery life, nor will the low ambient temperature affect the battery capacity. Generally, the voltage per section is 1.2V, and UPS needs to design a higher charger voltage due to the application of this kind of battery.

3. Maintenance-free storage battery

Also known as valve-controlled sealed lead-acid battery, maintenance-free battery due to the advantages of its own structure, the consumption of electrolyte is very small, in the life of the basic need not to supplement distilled water. It also has the characteristics of seismic resistance, high temperature resistance, small volume and small self-discharge. The service life is usually twice that of a common battery. There are also two kinds of maintenation-free batteries on the market: the first is that there is no need for maintenance (adding supplementary liquid) in the use after adding electrolyte at the time of purchase; The other is that the battery itself has been added electrolyte and sealed when it leaves the factory, the user can not add a supplement at all.

Due to the free maintenance battery USES lead calcium alloy grid frame, charging when the water quantity is little, low moisture evaporation, coupled with the outer seal structure, the acid gases released is very few, so it is compared with the traditional battery, do not need to add any liquid, pile head for wiring, wire less corrosion, overcharge resistance is strong, large starting current, power advantages of long storage time.

Maintenance-free battery because of its under normal charging voltage, electrolyte to produce only small amounts of gases, plate has a strong ability to resist charging, and has a small internal resistance, cold starting performance is good, than conventional battery service life is long, etc, and therefore does not need to add distilled water, throughout the duration in the charging system under normal circumstances, do not need to supplement charge from removed. However, the specific gravity of the electrolyte should be checked during maintenance.

Most maintenance-free batteries have a hole liquid (temperature compensated) hydrometer on the cover that changes color according to the specific gravity of the electrolyte. It can indicate the storage state of the battery and the height of the electrolyte level. When the indicator eye of the hydrometer is green, it indicates that the charge has been sufficient and the battery is normal. When the indication eye green dot is little or black, indicating that the battery needs to be charged; When the indicator eye shows a light yellow color, it indicates an internal failure of the battery that requires repair or replacement.
